A profile of Najma Ghouse

http://mikeghouseforamerica.blogspot.com/2008/05/profile-of-najma-ghouse.html

Najma Ghouse; the final journey here

Najma Ghouse Passed away on Thursday the 22nd of May 2008, and leaves behind a legacy of purposeful life, full of good will and thousands of friends who mourn her passing deeply and will miss her terribly.

Najma was born in Hyderabad, India on November 18, 1947. She was raised in Karachi, Pakistan and spent most of her adult life (35 Years) in Dallas area. She is survived by her Mother, who is 80 now, three daughters, a grand daughter, four grand sons, four brothers, three sisters and a grieving husband. A total family of 57 members, all but nine live in Carrollton Texas.

She was diagnosed for ovarian cancer on August 14, 2007. Surgery for Peritoneal Cancer was done on August 29, 2008. The Chemotherapy regimen appeared to work. A very virulent form of Cancer returned and Chemotherapy started again. On May 8th the family agreed to the in home hospice program. After two weeks at home, on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:20 PM, she peacefully took her last breath and embarked on her eternal Journey.

Najma was stoic, she had prepared for this journey, she had jettisoned the anxieties and the desires of worldly living. She was content with the purposeful life she lived, and grateful to the creator for enriching her with a full spectrum of life experiences from serene bliss to utter sadness, loneliness to being loved. No wonder she passed away with a smile on her face, as if saying, I have successfully completed my life as an individual, a woman, mother, sister, daughter, grand mother and a wife and now I need to experience the eternal life.

Najma and husband Mike have lived in Carrollton since 1999. Najma's daughter Farah lives in New York, Uzma with her husband Sultan and two kids live in Dubai and Erum and her husband Sabir live with their three kids in Lewisville. Mike's son Jeff goes to the Law school at SMU and daughter Mina will be going to UTD.

Najma's legacy – The Spirit of Volunteerism

Her dearest and last project was, developing a shelter for the disadvantaged and women in distress, particularly immigrants, who were not fully integrated in to the society. The process had just begun and she held a meeting at her house in Carrollton in March this year.

Her joy was in helping set up the free Medical clinic for the uninsured as a service of the Islamic Association of North Texas. Today the clinic opens three days a week and serves a large number of patients a month.

She was deeply involved in "Bazm-e-Urdu" a literary poets group in Dallas started by her father. She participated in 35 International "Musha-Era's" (Poetry recitation sessions) with some of the most celebrated poets in the language from across the globe.
The spirit of Volunteerism

She reveled in giving and was rewarded by that internal happiness. She served all in need, irrespective of race, color, religion or age.

She is fondly remembered for organizing nearly thirty free community health fairs.

Najma was blessed with an open mind and an open heart. She was proud to have served the Annual Spelling bee conducted by the DFW Hindu Temple, Qaid Mela's of Pakistan Society, Dinner events of Chambers of Commerce, the Lions Club, The Muslim Community Center, Red Cross, the United Way and other organizations. To her every human being deserved caring.

Najma won the hearts of thousands of Dallas émigrés from South Asia; the people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka through her radio programs since 1996. Her program "Yadien aur Choti Choti Batien" was hugely popular. She weaved beautiful songs with life's little things that make life worth living.

She was one of the first commercial South Asian Radio co-broadcasters in Dallas; the program was called Asian News Radio in 1996 on AM Radio 1150. She also co-anchored the first Desi TV program in 1996 on TV 52 in the DFW Market.

The Golden Oldies and Golden Melodies was a memorable program that Najma and I shared with some 200 of our friends, several times in the late Nineties. It was down the memory lane, living in the imaginary yester years for a few pleasant hours.

Najma was a master of ceremonies for many of the biggest Bollywood concerts in town, especially with Lata Mangeshkar, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwariya Rai, Aamir Khan, Amit Kumar, Salman Khan, Asha Bhosle, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam and just about every big star. The most cherished moment for Najma was when Lataji, the Saraswati of Indian singers praised her emceeing, her command on the language and her voice to the point that Farida Jalal, the international emcee stepped back and gave the Microphone to Najma to continue emceeing. Asha Bhosle repeatedly admired Najma's manner of speaking.

She was the master of Ceremonies at the annual thanksgiving celebrations and has presided over many of the annual events for the Pakistan Society, Muslim Community Center, Lions Club and several civic organizations.

Najma had an eternal reverence for her teacher Ms. Safia Khan at Newtown High School in Karachi, Pakistan. She credited Ms. Khan for instilling discipline and determination to serve the mankind. She must have been a great teacher and an inspirer.

Najma Ghouse was a committed Citizen. Committed to serving the community, she ran for the Carrollton City council and would have won, had some of her supporters did not assume that she will win and not go to polls.

She was a Medical technologist by profession and switched to serving the real estate industry in the last decade as it allowed her to volunteer.

She was one of the founding members of the Texas Muslim Women's Foundation; she served on the boards of Red Cross, Pakistan Society and the Muslim Community Center for human services.

She was accorded the title “Ambassador for peace” by the Inter religious and international federation for world peace. She had the honor of emceeing the Dallas event for Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon upon her 72 nation peace mission, and had the distinct honor of Garlanding the first couple Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon.

Najma was a big part of the Cricket scene in Dallas. She had co-sponsored several tournaments and was the co-commentator at the first largest Cricket tournament in Dallas "The MG Gold cup" in 1996. The tournament boosted Cricket in Dallas area and gave birth to North Texas Cricket Association.

She had a green thumb; the summer of 2007 provided the family with fresh Tomatoes, Okra, Egg Plants, Dill, green peppers, coriander leaves, mint, green onions, peaches, figs, beans and much more from her Garden.

She enjoyed visits to Dallas Arboretum. Visiting a running creek in Salado had become a sacred trip to us. Driving to Tyler and singing along the Golden Oldies was her way of enjoying life.

She performed Hajj, one of the duties of a Muslim, once in a life-time. She also recited the Shahadah, the pledge that God alone is worthy of worship and Prophet Muhammad was God's messenger several times during her last few days and particularly on the last day. It is considered a purifying statement by Muslims.

She let go of things and attained her freedom, Nijaat, Mukti, Moksha and Nirvana. May God bestow his mercy on her. Amen.

Najma and I shared good and bad times, sadness and happiness, nothingness to bountifulness, turbulence to serenity and above all a deep love. On Wednesday, as I was stepping out, she called my name, I turned around and looked at her; she said "I love you". That love will sustain me. Thank you Najma.

COMMENTS RECEIVED FROM FRIENDS _____________________________________________________

We appreciate our friends for their personal phone calls, visits, emails and some comments;
From Santha and GK Kalyanram

Santha and I send our prayerful condolences on Najma's passing on.

I knew Najma -- she had all the gifts (obviously, except for longevity) of a wonderful human being and a thoughtful citizen. As some one who has personally confronted untimely loss of a loved one, I know that time, while not a healer (for untimely deaths), will certainly give you an opportunity to regroup your life with the acceptance of the new reality.

We know that Najma is in that "undiscovered place" (as Shakespeare would call it) -- joyous, peaceful and restful.

Najma, in her life reminded of its vitality and possibilities, and in her death Najma reminds us of its fragility and impermanence. And with that realization, we too continue to travel carrying with us a sense of appreciation and gratitude for all that Najma gave us.

As T.S. Eliot used to sing, "In the end, is my beginning." And so, I think, Najma is making a new beginning. Let us wish her all the fortunes as she starts this new journey and sing in the words of vedic hymn (as an eclectic, I know that you will appreciate and embrace this) --
Pashyema sharadashatam
(May Najma see pleasant sights for eternity)
Jiveme sharadashatam
(May Najma live for eternity)
Nanddama sharadashatam
(May Najma enjoy the pleasures of life for eternity)
Modaama sharadashatam
(May Najma enjoy the company of friends and family for eternity)
Bhavaama sharadashatam
(May Najma be illustrious for eternity)
Shrunvaama sharadashatam
(May Najma hear auspicious sounds for eternity)

With prayers.

Santha and GK

Dear MikeI liked Najma and will miss seeing her with you, whether at Kananda gatherings or elsewhere. The last time I saw her and spoke to her and held her hands, she was hopeful though she knew the challenges she was facing. She was too young to leave us. I hope that the future will see better treatment for these dreaded diseases so that young people can live a fuller life. The days ahead will be difficult for you and your family. I can only wish you thestrength to face them. Be assured we will all remember Najma fondly.

Dear Mike:
ASAK,
I wish I could share your grief and sorrow. May Allah (swt) grant her Magferat, an ala place in heaven and patience to you all to bear this unbearable loss. Although I had met her only couple of times, last time on TMO presentation in Dallas, I was impressed with her straightforwardness, simplicity and kindness. She was wonderful a person. Her attempt to run for the city council inspired many women in our community.

May I request you to send me Najma's photograph and couple of paragraph write up that I want to publish in The Muslim Observer under obituary?

Dear Mike,
Assalamu Alaikum,

The inevitable has come. As Allah says in the Quran, when the scheduled time for one's death comes, one can neither bring it a moment before that time, nor postpone it a moment beyond that time. This is something that is not in the hands of us mortals. Allah has taken Najma into His protection. We pray for her Maghfirah (forgiveness) and ask Allah to open the doors of Jannah ( paradise) for her.
We appreciate your heroic patience and endurance during this time of trial for you. Your total devotion to her and you single minded commitment to giving her comfort and solace at a time when she was gracefully preparing for her final departure, was highly commendable. I am sure it must be equally highly rewarding spiritually. May Allah give you patience and give you courage to continue her legacy in a positive direction.

As our Prophet advised us, to perpetuate the memory of our loved ones, we should institutionalize their legacy. We should make sure that their aspirations, ideas, dreams and commitments are translated into long lasting institutions that continue to work for those aspirations and dreams beyond their earthly existence. As a tireless activists husband, it should be your life long commitment to continue strengthen the agenda that she had held dear to herself.

Once again, we pray for patience for you in this time of trial and pray to Allah to give you the strength to get the right lessons from this sad but great experience, and enrich you spiritually with right insights and understanding of life. Ameen

Dear Mike
Inna Lillahi wa inna Ilaihi Rajioon To say that I am sad about Najma's passing is an understatement. These are the times that though we want to comfort, but do not find adequate words that would ease the pain.
Your best consolation is the grace, care and love that both of you bestowed on each other when the dire certainty of parting stared you in the face. The deep faith and invaluable conjoined journey you shared sustained both of you and will carry you through in these intensely sad times.
May God grant you and your family peace, and Najma his loving grace and protection! I feel fortunate to have known her. I know today you will be very busy with all the details of the last rites, and final earthly farewell. The next few days will be harder to bear.
It may make a modicum of difference to know that I share in your pain as I have known enough pain know how you much you will miss her. You know that Najma touched many lives and affected the institutions he loved. The void will be felt far and wide and for long. The best tribute we can pay is to redouble our efforts to do what we praise her for.
One can never be adequately prepared for the ultimate parting, even though in the back of our minds we all know that it is right around the corner.
Life is a gift that needs to be cherished, enjoyed and lived with grace and humility. Both of you knew that and lived every moment to its fullest. Her memory will help you continue the struggles both of you considered important that gave meaning to your lives.
With sadness, best wishes and regards,
Mirza

Dear Mike, AA,
We were all very saddened to hear about Sr. Najma's passing away. My wife joins me in offering our heartfelt condolences to you and your family. May Allah give you all the patience to bear this loss and may Allah give a place in Jannah to the departed.
The Book says it very candidly that "ALLAH places not burden on any soul but to the extent of his strength(2,286)" and "every soul is to taste death(3,185)". Sr. Najma, probably, could not bear the pain any longer and hence ALLAH(SWT) has bestowed HIS mercy upon her in the form of relief from this earthly pains. May ALLAH(SWT)shower His mercy and forgive the departed soul and make her enter paradise promised to all believers. 'Ameen"
" Surely, for Allah was what he took, and for him is what he gave, and with Him there is a time appointed for everyone. "
Sincerely,
Basit,

Najma's Funeral Prayers.
Mike is an admirable husband. May God Almighty protect him from evil ------ Amen.
It was very touching to me. The Congregation so full. I have never expected before.
Every one prayed for her sanctity. May peace be with all.
I really admire all the Cancer Doctors & Nurses & all care takers.
I do so much of grief counseling & give lot of sympathy to people.
I was moved today. Such a happy go lucky lady was resting in so much
peace after going through (God only knows what ?) To me it is not an
end it is a beginning & we must all start to take extra care of all of
us. We will never know what will happen in a fraction of a second.
Most difficult task is accepting death. That is the last thing we
have to do. We did it.
I have another friend her name is also Najma & she took all the
medical treatment as her son is a Doctor & then went to India &
completed the Ayer-Vedic course. She is fine. I brought her down to
this Najma for learning experience.
But this one spread like fire.
All the Hospitals & all the Specialists in Dallas could not keep Najma
Ghouse alive.
She will live for ever in the hearts of the people; who were taken
care by her. She gave life to people homes to needy & luxury to others
also.
God Almighty will reward her abundantly. For Sure.
I cannot express my regards to Mike for his dedication. & to Dr. Anil

kindness & care.

Indeed God has been accompanying you, your wife and family throughout. I did not want to email you and wanted instead to write, but I did not realize how sudden this could be. I'm sorry I did not know how serious this was when Lon asked you to join the Board, as I did not know you were carrying such a burden.
I too saw my mother go in peace not too long ago and am at peace that she is in peace with the Ultimate Peace and Beauty, though I miss her. And it seems you have the same kind of joy for your wife, Najma, that she is amidst something greater than this earthly life.
Although I did not know her, I have in common an interest in domestic violence. Knowing that that was of interest to her tells me we already rather knew each other through spirit.
My heart and prayers go to you and your family. I am grateful for having met you and your compassion. I trust that the love you & yours have will bring you some peace through your journey as well.

From Annie & TP Mathew

Hello Mike,

With heart felt sorrows, let me convey our condolences to you. In a way I am glad she said goodbye to all sufferings and entered in to the eternity. As the whole world knows that she believed in pluralistic society and regarded all religions. That may be the very reason that the good Lord allowed few of us comprising of three prominent religions of the world (HINDU, CHRISTIAN, MUSLIM) could stand by her bed and offered the last prayer before her last breath. I think, the end happened just few minutes after we left your home. We left your home about 7:15 PM. Hope it was pleasing to her soul, and it was clear that she was a great person. My wife Annie joins me in conveying our heartfelt condolences.

May the good Lord God of all grant her eternal peace and continue to give strength, courage and peace to you and the family to bear this great loss.
With love and regards,

From Deva (Phillip) Ramsaroop

My Dear Friend Mike,

This comes as a surprise to us. We have not been aware that Najma was ill. I guess living in Florida has kept us out of the loop. We are truly sorry to hear of this news. As sad as it may appear, you rightly stated that she has embarked on her eternal Journey.

When such a dear one passes on, it is difficult for us who are left behind to understand and accept this mystery of life and death. For this reason we often cry and grieve. However, we must realize and accept, that Najma has gone to a higher plane at the will of God, and that God knows what is best for her. All we can offer now are our prayers and best wishes for her journey. We ask God to provide her a home of peace and joy. Najma's sojourn and purpose on earth has come to an end and God has called her for a higher purpose. We all have to take this journey and Najma will help to prepare the path for us when that time comes. In doing so we will meet Najma again and continue our fellowship. While we consider ourselves humans having a spiritual experience, we are indeed Spiritual beings having a human experience and our true self is oneness with God. Occasions like this tend to let us ponder on this so called mystery of life after death.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and family at this time

Sincerely,
Deva (Phillip) Ramsaroop

I got the news a few days earlier through Irfan Ali Sahib (of Denton) that she is in her last stages in the hospital. I wanted to call you immediately and share my thoughts, but he suggested not to. Then last night I received the news, that Sr. Najma left us, from another friend of mine in Carrollton. My heart sank. Very sad to hear about the sad news. I knew her, and her father Soofi Fazlurrahman Saheb, for a long time (almost a quarter century) when I used to live in DFW area. I knew her to be a kind, gentle, pleasant, courteous, brave, and very service minded lady. I am, at the same time, pleased that she met the maker at the right time at the first call. 4. Dear Mike,
The inevitable took over. It was a sight to see the strength the entire family and especially you displayed in such time of travails and trauma. That everyone was there is in itself a lot of visible love (divya or manifested love).

Najmaji was a good human being, who enjoyed life and it's moments and knew her responsibilites and met each one of them to it's finest detail and having received much, knew her responsibility that she had to give back, and that too she did much of.

You were only a catalyst in her life that made her bloom even further, as she was to you. Such teamwork and such understanding that both of you portrayed is amazing. I want to be reminded of her achievements and accomplishments and that she chose how to and when to leave this mortal earth.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences for the family and for you, in this most difficult time for your family and you. Please know that she will ever be with all of us in spirit and when we need a dose of courage, bravery, love, peace, all we need is to think of her.

  58. In the memory of our dear “Choti Apa”

    By M. Hamed Hussain Aghai.

Dallas’s famous ICON, a medical technologist, a real estate professional and a true volunteer, Najma Ghouse passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm at her home. She courageously fought cancer, a long battle for nine months, never losing her spirit of faith. Relatives and friends immediately gathered to pay their last respects to their departed leader.

Najma apa was born on October 2, 1947 in Hyderabad. Her parents moved to Pakistan shortly after Pakistan was created. Najma apa was very proud of her Hyderabadi and Pakistani heritage. Shortly after her marriage, she moved with her husband and two little daughters to United States in 1972 and made Dallas, Texas her new home. Later in the mid seventies, she had her third child.

Najma apa excelled in her academic career and was a recipient of several distinctions and awards in her college and at inter collegiate level competition. Her professional career as a medical technologist at major hospitals in the Dallas area was valued and recognized.. She not only had enormous love for but also great talent in Urdu poetry. She served as a moderator (an emcee) at several grand mushaira (Urdu poetry gathering) and received numerous compliments for a job well done.

Allah, the Almighty had blessed her with many great talents but her relationship from her first marriage ended in 1988. Some years later, she was married to Mohammed (Mike) Ghouse on July 4th, 1996. With the start of her new relationship, her professional career took a new turn in the field of real estate business. Allah bestowed her with outstanding success in her new venture. It seemed like what ever she touched was turned into gold. She always had great compassion for the less fortunate and she was always touched by who were helpless. Even with a hectic business schedule and keeping up with clients, she had this thought, brewing in her mind to find a way to reach out to the less fortunate people within her own community. Finally, she was able to find few professionals who teamed up with her to form a non profit agency to help less fortunate individuals at various capacities. She volunteered countless hours, days, and nights for various agencies that she and others have jointly established. Even today, many individuals are seeking valuable services from these agencies.

At home she kept herself busy maintaining a beautiful garden. After her morning prayers she would be busy watering her plants in the backyard and around the house. She decorated her front of the house by planting seasonal flowers. She was very fond of gardening and often gave valuable tips to the family and friends in the field of gardening.

Despite of her busy schedule, her religious events and activities were hosted with full of love and devotion. She made sure her guests were treated and fed well. Since she moved to Dallas, Texas she initiated hosting the traditional “Eid Brunch” at her house for Ramazan and Bakhr Eid. All the family members and close friends had a wonderful time and one could easily feel her love for her guests.

After fulfilling her all her desires, she felt she had missed something. Not too long ago she also ran for a city council position and she honored me by appointing her as a campaign treasurer. She ran the race very professionally, courageously, and she fared well in the several debates with her other opponents. She stood up for what she believed and faced with some tough challenges during her campaign. The race was very close and she had lost marginally but it was a great experience and she had learned a lot in her short political career.

Lastly, I have to say a few words about Najma apa as to how I first got impressed with her dynamic personality. She was the key person who helped arranged my marriage with Rafia, her younger sister in March of 1984. She played a pivotal role in our wedding. I still remember very well the comfort and support she had given me on the saanchak night by sitting next to me at the time of the “mehndhi” rasam (ritual). I was surrounded by all women with no men near me. Her support and advice had given me an immense strength instantaneously during the entire ceremony. Our wedding might have been the first wedding in the Dallas area that was performed with all the rituals and customs in her own house in Garland, Texas. Few of our friends still talk about the great memories from our wedding. I have some great memories with her. Occasionally, I visited her on Saturdays and cooked “upma” (a south Indian delicacy, made of rice flour. It is also called cream of wheat) or I fried some goodies (kidneys, hearts, and liver) while she would make some hot and mushy “khichdi”. She enjoyed talking to me in Hyderabadi. We often exchanged some famous couplets of few poets like, Ghalib, Mir, and others. It all seems like a mere dream now. It reminds me of a commercial that airs on desi TV by Nationwide Insurance Company – Life comes at you fast. And it is absolutely right. It also reminds of the proverb “Art is long, life is short”.

Najma apa was proud of her grandchildren and she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She has four grand sons and only one grand daughter. Alizae, the oldest and the only grand daughter was very close and dear to her. Last year, she had spent all of her time with Alizae. She had Alizae with her visiting her clients, inspecting properties, dining, and watching movies.

Najma apa had a big heart and love to help people. She was very strong in her faith and lived her life accordingly. She lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed, and we thank Allah, the Almighty for having her for sixty years in this world.

Those left to treasure her many memories are her husband, her beloved mother, three sisters, four brothers, three daughters, and five grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. With deep sense of my love to her, I pray to Allah, the Almighty to bless her with highest place in the Jannath, Aameen! Apa, true people of Allah never die.

Najma Apa, you are in a better place than us and you can see us all but unfortunately we cannot see you or hear you. Enjoy the eternal peace that Allah, the Almighty has bestowed upon you and insha’Allah we will join you sooner or later. Insha’Allah, once we join you we will have our traditional “galput” in the Jannath again.

    With my sincere love,

    M. Hamed Hussain Aghai.

  64. Hello, Mike. I have been thinking of you since last week, hoping that you are still surrounded by family and friends. Sometimes there is a lot more support before a loved one passes than afterwards, and I hope that's not the case with you.

I am so glad I was able to attend the prayer service for Najma at the mosque. It was clear that you do indeed have many dear friends, both Muslim and non-Muslim, because both you and Najma were/are such caring, serving people.

My husband and I were both deeply touched by your e-mail tribute to Najma immediately after she passed on. She really did a lot in her lifetime, as you said, and she could go on into heaven without regret, although she undoubtedly would have liked to stay longer with you and her other family members.

I hope her mother is doing okay? Also her daughters.

Anyway, I did send a donation to the MCC in her name.

Many blessings are wished for you,
