God's Grace for Najma Ghouse

God has been good to us. After 9 months of good medical care and God's grace, Najma, my wife is now completely under God's care and surviving with Allah’s grace, your wishes and prayers.
.
UPDATED - May 24th
.
At 7:25 PM on Thursday Night, May 22nd, Najma took her last breath in peace and embarked on her eternal journey. Janaza (Funeral) prayers are after Friday Congregation (about 2:30 PM) in Richardson Mosque.
Inna Lilla hi o Inna Ilaihi ur rajewoon - From God we came and to God we go.

She was in peace and left this world with a gentle smile.

Those who wish to send flowers, we request them instead to support to her project - Domestic Violence. You can do so by going to the MCC's website http://www.mcc-hs.org/ and scroll down on the right side and click the button donation. It will take you directly to pay-pal. You can fill the required information and put the donation amount.

We are home since Thursday, 8th of May, and I have been sitting by her bedside praying for her well being ... knowing that she could go any moment is a difficult thing to do. I took some time out to share this message with you, my friends.

In the foot steps of Prophet Muhammad, as a Muslim, I draw inspiration from all faiths and share this beautiful precise expressive phrase from Jainism “ Michami Dukadam”, the essence of which is, on this day, let’s forgive and ask for forgiveness and start the next breath of life with a clean slate, free from guilt, free from anxiety, free from hate, malice, anger and all those enslaving emotions. This is also the essence of many religious festivals including Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Paryushan and Ramadan.
.

They say that both the forgiver and the forgived are blessed with the peace of mind and the freedom from negativity. It is indeed true salvation, mukti, moksha, nijaat, nirvana and other expressions to describe that freedom. The Qur'aan says that God’s favorite person is the one, who forgives and seeks forgiveness. It is also an idea central to the teachings of Jesus Christ. I want to thank every one who has participated and will participate in this heart and mind purifying process with Najma and I.
.
Please say "Michami Dukadam", it will complete the transaction.

One of the most memorable times of my life is spending time with Najma in her last moments, blessed is she, she has been reciting the article of our faith several times a day with me, “ La Ila ha Illal Lahu Muhammadur Rasool ulla” that I worship the creator God and honor his messenger Prophet Muhammad. She had asked me to read Sura Rahman, as well as reciting Sura Fateha with me. Her words come out and sink but she is not giving up the recitation. Remembering God and seeking his blessings is considered auspicious in Islam as in every faith. We have done this many times since my brother in law Hamid Hussein initiated this practice on Wednesday. May Allah be pleased with us. Najma's whole family surrounds her showering their love and affection.

Alhamdu Lillah, (praise the lord), I am pleased that she has the luxury to close the loose ends of life and continue her journey in peace, just as my Mother did. It is a beautiful way to bring closure to living a fuller life with all the gamut of emotions and experiences. I wish this happens to me, you and every one.

There is a part in me that hopes for a miracle that she would get up and say let's have a few more years of life filled with a whole spectrum of experiences of Khatta (sour), Meetha (sweet), Pheeka (unsalted), Teekha (off), Khara (spicy) and Kadva (bitter) brim with caring and lots of loving.

I want to thank the Doctors, Nurses and the medical care personnel* (listed below) who were so kind and caring, indeed that was a greater part of the caring. Then my gratitude goes to our friends who called, wrote and visited to show their support.

The biggest source of one’s serenity and joy comes from volunteerism, and to inspire and encourage the volunteer in each one of us, Insha Allah (God willing), I plan to hold a two hour evening of memories for Najma to include interfaith prayers and her dear friends sharing her passion to serve.

Thanks for your friendship.

Jazak Allah Khair

  3. Dear Mike,

I know your wife is in Allah's hands. She has run the race and fought the good fight. I want to say how much I appreciate you and your wife. To me you truly are saints - holy people who deserve God's blessing thousands of times over. You both have sacrificed to serve the purpose of peace and that is you legacy, your monument that you have erected. I believe it is indestructible. I pray your wife is at peace. Please know that my thoughts, prayers, and love are with you both at this time.. If there is something more I can do, please let me know. I just wanted to say my heart is with you and I feel that everything is in God's hands.

Assalaamu Alaikum, Mike. Please give Najma our salaam. We thank Allah for giving Najma to us for all the time that she has here. We enjoy working with her for when we do we have seen the Muslim community, peace and love that she represents. She has always been so kind and loving and I'll never forget that she, along with other Muslims in Grand Prairie on Bagdad St. helped me to understand my Muslim brothers and sisters from Pakistan. My family and I will never forget that. We pray for her health and strength and that Allah forever blesses your family.

  10. Mike,

I feel like being part of your family with your email that you shared plus all the announcements and various community groups you are maintinging. I know you from this (MPV) and PakistaniAmericans groups. I know Najma from your emails about her running for public office in texas. I truly value and appreciate your family's committment to community and public service. Knowing all this only make one ask why God tests the best of Its people this way? The only answer I have is that this is part of a process of evolution of individual souls. Those who are already flying in a higher plane get a tougher test to propel them into even higher altitude / levels.

May Allah give Najma strenght to recover. But if that is not the wish of the Creator and Sustainer then may Allah give your soul the patience to bear this loss. You are saddened, I am saddened and community feels the loss but remember Najma. She is in a much better, beautiful and peaceful place and we should be happy for her.

Mike, please don't stop the good work you are doing for the community. Please let me know how I can help.

    Warmest regards,
    Farrukh

  11. Dear Mike.

Please allow me to share your grief, albeit at a distance and pray!

May God rest her soul in eternal peace and grant you all the strength and patience to acknowledge her departure as the inevitable destiny of us all.

Allow me also to say to you -- take solace in the knowledge that your partner did not suffer the physical world for too long and that she passed away relatively in peace. That in itself was Gods grace granted to few.

Cherish the memories of the happy times spent with her and move on for those she left behind.

Thank you for your email. I am sorry I did not know the situation more clearly. We (Yoko and myself) often think of you, and pray for you, but now we can pray with more clarity.

I am glad you both have time to share with each other. May God give you both peace and strength. May he bless you richly in his own mysterious ways. You are a wonderful couple. One comfort that I have is that our relationships are eternal. How we live in this world will affect how we live in the next world.

  19. Dear Mike, Dear Najma
Thanks for this email. The inexpressible feelings that pass through our hearts - the place where the mind (mana)with it's endless flow of thoughts and the intellect (buddhi) which makes the decisions on which thoughts to keep and which thoughts to let go - makes us happy that Najma has you by her bedside and sad that the Lord chooses to do to her. Maybe HE needs a new cabinet member and what better a person than Najma would be. We may find solace in that. Then our heart rejoices that one we knew so close up is getting there and then we start thinking of ourselves and then we start praying to HIM, what is going on.
However, you are right, we have to think beyond ourselves. The joy of her, not of ourselves. The decision HE decides, not ourselves. The LOVE HE is so much greater than we can be.
Mike, you be strong. Najma, you recover. Most of all you know, we have the highest regards for your actions and for the way you have performed your duties and the goals you have undertaken and achieved.
We invoke the Lord's grace to give the family and all of us the strength to bear what there is in store for us. Life and death are HIS choices alone.
Realizing our nothingness, we say to the Lord: Teraa Bhaanaa Meethaa Laage: O Lord your will we have no choice but to accept. Give us strength to accept the same.
We pray on this Mother's Day.

  20. Dear Mr. Mike,

I don't know how I got subscribed to dallasindian community. Probably through sulekha/eknazar, I am not sure. Initially I felt little annoyed with few mails coming to my inbox through this community. However, before unsubscribing, I decided to have a look at some of the mails and realized that they were no spam or junk mails but very sensible mails. As a result, I decided to stay in community and started reading the mails as and when I had time. Eventually I got impressed with your moderate views and moderation of the community. In you I see a very good human being and a muslim who is so different from the muslims I encounter in general. In you, I also see the spirit of India and honestly, in you I see hope for islamic world which seems so intolerent at times.

In your past few mails I read that your wife is fighting with poor health and in critical condition. At this time, I want to convey all my best wishes and prayers for her. I sincerely and very optimistically hope that she restores good health.

    Thanks, regards and prayers,

As I've been around you, read your words, her strength as a life partner have always been there. I am blessed to know you both. Tell her our prayers have been and will be with her and her family. Last week in Austin when we did our Sweat Ceremony, she/you were there.

  27. Dear Mike:

Sharing one's joy is easier than sharing suffering and pain. To share a loss is to share one's deepest emotions. Thanks for the faith of bestowing this privilege on us. There are no words that can ease the pain. The only attribute that helps is the faith in Divine all encompassing limitless wisdom, beyond human understanding.

We are, and should be grateful for the grace that allows us to share such deep love, which is the cause of the deep sense of loss. There will be no sense of loss without the enveloping emotion of love.

I know my words will not be of much help, but the balm emanates from the love you shared with Najma. You may recall our last conversation about the meaning of being

It is the spark of life, the soul that gives meaning to the structured arrangement of cells and makes us much more than our parts. That is what is embedded in our memories.

Zindagi Kya Hai, anasir meN zahoore tarteeb

Maut kya hai inheeN ajza ka pareshaN hona

Time takes its toll, and all of us are waiting for our ride into the eternity. The people we loved forever live until our memories live. and the pain of loss is a tribute to the person who meant so much to us. She was and will remain an intrinsic part of you. This sublime sentiment is peace, happiness, pain and longing all entangled in one. It will at times bring a smile, and at times a sigh without warning, and you will cherish both without distinction.

I wrote a poem titled "In memories we live" couple of years ago, when you feel up to it I will send you a copy.

The time always passes. You are doing what a loving caring husband with deep faith does. The great gift of faith in God is that it allows us to acknowledge our limited nature and find solace in the unlimited wisdom and mercy. Najma is blessed to have such a loving husband and family and you are blessed to have a companion to shower the deepest emotions of love. May both of you revel in the sublime,

    Mirza

Allah (SWT) give you courage to forebear the impending tragedy. It is the process that He has laid down for all living beings to come to earth, pass some time with tears and smiles and vacate the place for others to shoulder the responsibilities towards its betterment.

Ghouse Bhai, you are a Muslim and have a firm faith in Allah. As such, pleas never fell dejected but look towards Him with hope that is our eternal treasure. He can give her still a new lease of life to fulfil some of her obligations that are yet to be accomplished by her. We humans don't know the Mashiyat [will] of Allah and therefore should always feel contented the way He is running our affairs. In the midst of this developing tragedy, studying of Verses # 55 and 56 of Chapter Al-Airaf and pondering over its content will sooth your heart and mind.

May Allah give complete consolation to your heart and give Sister Najma fastest recovery, the only hope that we can sustain at these hours of trial. Allah's Rahmah is very close to you.

    Dear Brother Mike: As-Salamu Alaikum.

I am sorry to hear about you wife, our sister's departure from this difficult world to the world of peace, to our Gracious God Almighty Who is oftforgiving. We all belong to Him The Almighty, we came from Him, will go back to Him. May The God Almighty bless you with lots of patience to be able to deal with this difficult time. May The God Almighty accept her soul with all Grace, and bless her with the Eternal abode of Paradise.

As we know from the Hadith of our beloved Prophet (SA) that a God loving and fearing soul at the time of death, when he/she see the Angel of death become very happy to go back to his/her Owner, The Almighty God, because a gladtiding and welcoming reward have been waiting for his/her.

After the death of my beloved father, one of my friends told me " when I heard a death of a Muslim I do not feel sad because his/her honorable departure from this difficult world to the world of peace is full of good news but for other people I feel very pain that if The Almighty Gracious God does not forgive them then a very difficult time is waiting for them".

Take it easy, we all follow the same route, but God Willing we all want to die with the last Word ( Shahadha) as our sister Najma did. Please make prayers for us for all the children of Adam. Today there is an earth quake in China, we need to pray for them.

I for one wholeheartedly share your grief and suffering but since you have a magnificent soul and have unshakable trust in the divine will, I am sure you have earned his blessings in this world as well.

Najma our sister, not long ago a vibrant soul is going through the hardest test of her life. She too is invincible because her soul is filled with the glory of God.I hope and pray to God for a miracle.

But this is also not short of a miracle that she and you and the whole family has made even this grief stricken situation into the one resplendent with the divine fragrance.Every soul has to taste the final parting moment. It is a will of God and so it be.The prayers of mine and my family are with you and gracious Najma.

  117. In the name of God, Most Beneficent, Most Merciful

    Peace be upon you.

The concept of death can be derived from these verses of the Quran - "He is the One who puts you to death during the night, and knows even the smallest of your actions during day. He resurrects you every morning, until your life span is fulfilled, then to Him is your ultimate return. He will then inform you of everything you had done. He is Supreme over His creatures, and He appoints guards to protect you. When the appointed time of death comes to any of you, our messengers put him to death without delay. Then everyone is returned to God, their rightful Lord and Master. Absolutely, He is the ultimate judge; He is the most accurate reckoner." (Quran 6:60-62)

The time of death is predetermined - "No one dies except by God's leave, at a predetermined time. Whoever seeks the vanities of this world, we give him therefrom, and whoever seeks the rewards of the Hereafter, we bless him therein. We reward those who are appreciative." (Quran 3:145)

No one knows the time or place of ones death - " With God is the knowledge regarding the Hour. He is the One who sends down the rain, and He knows the contents of the womb. No soul knows what will happen to it tomorrow, and no one knows in which land he or she will die. God is Omniscient, Cognizant." (Quran 31:34)

Every soul will experience death - "Every soul will taste death, after we put you to the test through adversity and prosperity, then to us you ultimately return." (Quran 21:35)

We already experienced our first death until we were born into this world - "Most exalted is the One in whose hands is all Kingship, and He is Omnipotent. The One who created death and life for the purpose of distinguishing those among you who would do better. He is the Almighty, the Forgiving." (Quran 67:1-2)

The second death concludes our life in this world - "How can you disbelieve in God when you were dead and He gave you life, then He puts you to death, then He brings you back to life, then to Him you ultimately return?" (Quran 2:28)

The righteous does not experience the second death - " The righteous will be in a secure position. Enjoying gardens and springs. Wearing velvet and satin; close to each other. We grant them wonderful spouses. They enjoy in it all kinds of fruits, in perfect peace. They do not taste death therein - beyond the first death - and He has spared them the retribution of Hell." (Quran 44:51-56)
"The angels terminate their lives in a state of righteousness, saying, "Peace be upon you. Enter paradise as a reward for your works." (Quran 16:32)

The Quran gives an example of the death of a righteous person - "And for claiming that they killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of God. In fact, they never killed him, they never crucified him - they were made to think that they did. All factions who are disputing in this matter are full of doubt concerning this issue. They possess no knowledge; they only conjecture. For certain, they never killed him. Instead, God raised him to Him; God is Almighty, Most wise." (Quran 4:157-158)
"They plotted and schemed, but so did God, and God is the best schemer. Thus, God said, "O Jesus, I am terminating your life, raising you to Me, and ridding you of the disbelievers. I will exalt those who follow you above those who disbelieve, till the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is the ultimate destiny of all of you, then I will judge among you regarding your dispute." (Quran 3:54 - 55)

The unrighteous experiences the second death - "Those who disbelieve will be told, "God's abhorrence towards you is even worse than your abhorrence towards yourselves. For you were invited to believe, but you chose to disbelieve. They will say, "Our Lord, you have put to us to death twice, and you gave us two lives; now we have confessed our sins. Is there any way out ?" This is because when God Alone was advocated, you disbelieved, but when others were mentioned beside Him, you believed. Therefore, God's judgment has been issued; He is the Most High, the Great." (Quran 40:10-12)

The nature of second death can be derived from these verses - "If you could only see those who disbelieved when the angels put them to death ! They will beat them on their faces and their rear ends; "Taste the retribution of Hell. This is a consequence of what your hands have sent forth. God is never unjust towards the creatures." (Quran 8:50-51)

The Quran gives an example of the death of unrighteous people - "Whenever a plague afflicted them, they said, "O Moses, implore your Lord - you are close to Him. If you relieve this plague, we will believe with you, and will send the children of Israel with you. Yet, when we relieved the plague for any length of time, they violated their pledge. Consequently, we avenged their actions, and drowned them in the sea. That is because they rejected our signs, and were totally heedless thereof." (Quran 7:134-136)

The death of righteous and unrighteous can be compared from these verses - "The (angels who) snatch (the souls of the disbelievers) forcibly. And those who gently take (the souls of the believers) joyfully." (Quran 79:1-2)

This is the crucial reminder of the Quran - Those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers, an earthful of gold will not be accepted from any of them, even if such a ransom were possible. They have incurred painful retribution; they will have no helpers." (Quran 3:91)

    Thanks and God bless

  133. Dear Mike, You have only met me a few times at interfaith gatherings but you always amazingly seem to have remembered me, which honors me greatly. We shared one such meal at a table filled with persons of several faiths (My husband and I are good friends of Bill and Norma Matthews). I want to thank you for including me among those with whom you have shared very precious and heartfelt thoughts about this most challenging time you and Najma are living through. Please know that my deepest prayers are with you and Najma, to the God I fervently believe we both worship in our differing ways and through our differing channels. It moves me greatly to hear of the devoutness with which you and Najma are continuing to enact your devotion to Allah and I know he hears your prayers and holds you in his loving and protective embrace. May his blessings, and the blessings of the God and Father of us all, be always upon you both, Kathy Johnson

    Dear Mike,

I can relate to you..to your young wife. I lost my husband ten years ago when he was fifty but he went so quickly that none of us who loved him could do anything. Now my mother is going slowly. Yesterday, I held her hand for two hours and thought she would go but, for some reason, God chose to let her have ‘kickback’ and, so, she is here.

I have my favorite Sura, which I only know in English, it is the Nur Sura, and the part I have loved since I was nineteen is:

[24:35] GOD is the light of the heavens and the earth. The allegory of His light is that of a concave mirror behind a lamp that is placed inside a glass container. The glass container is like a bright, pearl-like star. The fuel thereof is supplied from a blessed oil-producing tree, that is neither eastern, nor western. Its oil is almost self-radiating; needs no fire to ignite it. Light upon light. GOD guides to His light whoever wills (to be guided). GOD thus cites the parables for the people. GOD is fully aware of all things.
[24:36] (God's guidance is found) in houses exalted by GOD, for His name is commemorated therein. Glorifying Him therein, day and night -
May the Merciful be with you and Najma.

    Your sister,

    Tatiana

  161. Dear Ghouse Sb. May you and Najma be the BLESSED ones, aameen.

Though I only know you through the Forum Writings; yet your message of today has surely touched the cords of my heart somewhere deep down! How I wish and hope that ALLAH should grant all of us...partners/companions to share and care for our respective "spouses", in the same spirit and manner as you have narrated here!!!

I am so moved, intensely, by your feelings that I very much want to share with you and all my dear friends of our Forum, about the same desperate and heart-rending feelings of LOVE shared by the famous 19th Century poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) wife of none other than Robert Browning. Well, may be that some members would not be aware of the fact that Elizabeth was indisposed to the extent of spending quite some time on a wheel-chair. And Robert very lovingly used to carry her in his arms.

Now I would like to share one of Elizabeth's LOVE POEMS with you...though as a
second thought I feel that it might be long for some persons. But if I abridge or
concise it; then it would lose its "essence" altogether!!!

    How do I love thee?
    Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
    My soul can reach,
    When feeling out of sight
For the ends of ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for rights.
I love thee purely; as they turn from praise
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
    With my lost saints.
I love thee with the breath, smiles, tears,
Of all my life; and if God choose,
I shall but love thee, better after death!

Well, Ghouse Sb. this suffices it all...my best of wishes and regards to you and
    your NAJMA.

    Sincerely,
    Farzana Khan.

  164. ASAK,

It is very painful to read what you are going thru. It is also true that one finds it almost impossible to find true words of consolation to extend, except duaa and hope.May Allah help her,and you, at this time of testing.

Faith has two branches, one is to be thankful (shukr) to Allah and the other is to be patient (sabr).

    The Qur’an tells us that

[Allah is with those who are patient and steadfast (as-sabirin).] (Al-Baqarah 2:153)

[Allah is with those who are righteous (al-muttaqin)] (Al-Baqarah 2:194)

[Allah is with those who do the acts of kindness (al-muhsinin)] (Al-`Ankabut 29:69)

We sincerely make duaas and hope for a positive outcome. The entire "goodindians" family feels your pain and sufferings. May Allah give you strength and patience. Regards.

  167. Dear Mike,

Bernie called me after he visited you, as I'd asked him to keep me informed because I am very concerned about Najma and you. I understand how bad this is -- it was the same with my sister, and I wish I could help. I was glad to learn from Bernie that you have lots of family close by. That is a blessing.

You are a very good man, Mike, and you've done a great deal for this community. Many of us who know you are thinking of you and Najma and praying for you both.

I wanted to call you yesterday but didn't because I know you have your hands full and your house full. I.'m writing this message instead . You'll see it when you can,

There is a God to whom we both pray -- you in your Muslim way and Bernie and Denise and I in our Jewish way. This one God loves us all as He does all his children of every faith. Najma will be in a better place, and just as it was with my sister, you will miss her terribly, but you will be thankful to know that at last she is out of pain.

  176. Dear Mr. Ghouse,

I am a bit sorry for having written you my last mail a little less courteously than is necessary. Sometimes, we just fail to see the other side of the fence. I can now visualize the turmoil you may be going through and wonder how you are still managing to communicate. My heart goes out to you in sympathy. I know very little of your personal life but have seen much of your work and that keeps me attached. I don’t know what I can do for you but I am sending you something for the solace of your soul. This is a small poem touching upon the sensitive subject of death. May Allah help you and your wife, here and in the hereafter! If anything happens, be sure I am mourning with you. But I wish and pray that your wife gets back to her full health, Insha Allah. Please do not take the trouble of replying to this mail now. I will understand.

    Best wishes,
    Yours sincerely

    ON DEATH

    When death hits life,
    In some remote corner,
Such as the felling of a distant cousin,
You are in a position to reflect.
    You are privileged,
To be out of the ambit of mourning,
    But are mindful,
    Of the ferocity of death!
For once – you get to grapple,
    With the real question!
But the more you come to strive,
The more you tend to sink,
    Into a numbing feeling,
    That nothing you could do,
    Except to write a poem
Before yourself, you slip into a wink!

  191. Dear Mike

I liked Najma and will miss seeing her with you, whether at Kananda gatherings or
elsewhere. The last time I saw her and spoke to her and held her hands, she was
hopeful though she knew the challenges she was facing. She was too young to leave
us. I hope that the future will see better treatment for these dreaded diseases
so that young people can live a fuller life.

The days ahead will be difficult for you and your family. I can only wish you the
strength to face them. Be assured we will all remember Najma fondly. Ramji

  192. Dear Mike,
I had met you and Najma ji in early 1999. Though, it was a short interaction I respected your outlook. Over the years, I've followed your work as a part of your email and felt compelled to express my thoughts and prayers during the time of your loss. I hope you acquire the courage and strength from your memories and work.

    Regards.

  194. Dear Brother
    As salaam alaikum

I would just like to share this Hadith

Ar-Riqaq: Patience on loss of dear friend (or relative)

Volume 008 :: Book 076 (To Make The Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq)) :: Hadith Number 432.

    Narrated By Abu Huraira :

Allah's Apostle said, "Allah says, 'I have nothing to give but Paradise as a reward to my believer slave, who, if I cause his dear friend (or relative) to die, remains patient (and hopes for Allah's Reward)."

Ar-Riqaq: 3 things that follow the dead

    Volume 008 :: Book 076 (To Make The Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq)) :: Hadith 521

    Narrated By Anas bin Malik:

Allah's Apostle said, "When carried to his grave, a dead person is followed by three, two of which return (after his burial) and one remains with him: his relative, his property, and his deeds follow him; relatives and his property go back while his deeds remain with him."

Inna Lillahi wa Inna ilaihi Raajiuun.

May Allah fogive her sins and grant her Jannah. Ameen.
